Equipped with an assignment from Esquire, Gay Talese went to Los Angeles in 1965 to interview Frank Sinatra. The famed crooner, however, was feeling ill and refused to meet with Talese. Undeterred, Talese continued with his assignment by interviewing friends, family, and associates of the singer, hoping that, over time, Sinatra would recover and cooperate. Although the singer never obliged, Talese's story pioneered an award-winning style known as New Journalism that captured an unprecedented portrait of Sinatra.
